How the HeyFamily Rewards System Works: Turn Chores Into a Game

Why have a rewards system for chores?

Household chores don't have to be a daily battle. When you turn responsibilities into a game where real points (stars) are earned and lead to tangible prizes, something magical happens: kids motivate themselves. It's not bribery β€” it's recognition and fun, combined.

In HeyFamily, the rewards system is designed so the whole family joins in enthusiastically, from little ones just learning to pick up toys to teenagers handling more complex tasks.

How it works: from chores to stars to prizes

Stars are the household currency

Every time someone completes an assigned task or routine, they add stars to their personal balance. These stars are visible in real time on each family member's card on the public screen (that tablet or TV in the kitchen). Watching the numbers go up is satisfying at any age.

There are no limits or "fines": you simply build up stars whenever you finish what's yours to do.

Create prizes with a star value

From HeyFamily's Tasks section, you (the household organizer) define the prizes. Each prize has:

  • An emoji to make it visual and fun
  • A clear name ("Ice cream," "Movie of your choice," "30 extra minutes on the console," "Trip to the park")
  • A star cost you decide based on how appealing the prize is

The great part is you tailor the value to your family: a small prize might cost 5 stars, a medium one 15, and something special 50. You're in full control.

Safe redemption from the public screen

When a family member has enough stars, they can go to the public screen and tap the Rewards button. There they see all available prizes and their costs. If they have enough balance, they redeem instantly. Stars are subtracted automatically and the prize is "claimed."

Built-in safety: nobody can redeem a prize without enough stars. The system prevents anyone from "overspending." It's transparent and fair for everyone.

Practical benefits for your family

Motivation without shouting

Instead of negotiating or threatening, you simply ask: "How many stars do you need for that prize?" That way kids understand they need to finish their tasks to get what they want.

Everyone wins at their own pace

They're not competing against siblings. Each one builds up at their own speed. Someone who finishes all their tasks fills their balance fast; someone slower still makes progress, just later. That teaches that consistent effort pays off.

Flexible prizes that fit your reality

Not everything has to cost money. The best prizes are often: special one-on-one time with a parent, choosing Friday's movie, a favorite homemade dessert, a screen-time-unlimited afternoon, an outing they get to pick, or a different breakfast. HeyFamily gives you total freedom to decide what motivates your family.

How to set up your rewards system

Step 1: Define tasks and routines

In the Tasks section, create or edit daily responsibilities. Each one will have a star value based on its difficulty or importance.

Step 2: Assign stars to tasks

A simple routine (making the bed) might be worth 2 stars. A more demanding task (cleaning the bathroom) might be worth 8. You decide.

Step 3: Create your custom prizes

Go to the Rewards section (inside Tasks) and create each one: name, emoji, star cost. Start with 5-10 varied prizes.

Step 4: Communicate the system

Gather the family, show them the public screen and explain how it works. Let everyone see their starting balance and the available prizes. Clarity avoids confusion.

Tips to make it work

  • Start with achievable prizes: don't make the first prize cost 100 stars. Small, frequent wins keep spirits up.
  • Celebrate every redemption: when someone redeems a prize, acknowledge the effort. "Look, you got to 20 stars!"
  • Adjust as you go: if something costs too much or too little, change it. The system is flexible.
  • Don't punish by removing stars: stars are earned, not lost. If someone doesn't finish a task, they simply don't add to their balance.

The end result

With HeyFamily, your home becomes a place where responsibilities make sense and effort is seen and valued. Kids learn that work leads to rewards, the family works as a team, and the kitchen tablet screen is a constant source of positive motivation.

It's not magic. It's smart organization with a bit of fun mixed in. That's how you bring a family together and keep it moving forward.
